The Trefry Family

The Trefry family (originally Treffrey; the name was shortened in the "New World") originated in Cornwall, England. The Treffrey name has been among the prominent family names in Cornwall for several centuries. Sir John Treffrey (ref: t-607), fighting in France under the Black Prince (Edward, Prince of Wales, son of King Edward III) at the battle of Poitiers, Sept. 9, 1356, captured the French Royal Standard. For this act he was created a Knight Baronet and his heraldic arms were augmented with the Fleur-de-lis of France.
The original Trefrys in North America are not known to us. A member of the family, Thomas Trefry(ref: t-75) lived in Marblehead, Massachusettes, in 1661. He had two sons, Thomas and James(ref: t-76).
James Trefry(ref: t-76) married Sarah Russel, June 8, 1702. Their son, Captain John Trefry(ref: t-77) (born Sept. 10, 1711) married Hannah Pitman (born March 1, 1711), daughter of James and Elizabeth (Huxtable) Pitman on Sept. 23, 1734. Their daughter, Sarah(ref: t-43) (born 1742) married Moses Vickery on Sept. 9, 1761.

The Pitman Family

Thomas Pitman (1614 - 1694) and his wife Joanna were the parents of John Pitman, a master mariner. John was a maternal great-grandfather of Sarah Trefry(ref: t-43), who married Moses Vickery. Moses and Sarah were the first Vickerys to move to Nova Scotia. John's sister, Elizabeth, was Sarah (Trefry) Vickery's paternal great-grandmother, so that Thomas and Joanna Pitman were her great-great-grandparents in both paternal and maternal lines.
